How to improve the communication between Board of Education anthe students, parents, and the public

ree

The Livingston Board of Education (BOE) stands as a model of commitment to transparency and engagement. Meetings, both in-person and online, combined with thorough archives, act as reliable touchpoints for the community. Direct email channels further amplify our dedication to open dialogue.

The turnout at our recent BOE meeting accentuated the community's profound desire for engagement and their need for their concerns to be recognized. As a candidate, I firmly believe that BOE members should tap into the community through various means to genuinely hear their voices. It's equally vital to respond promptly and effectively to their feedback.

BOE members often engage with various town committees like the LCDI, LACD, and LMAC, acting as liaisons between school and home. While they don't hold voting rights within these committees, their presence facilitates the translation of community voices into tangible actions. A few months ago, I had the privilege of attending an LCDI meeting where Jessica Aldana, a dedicated LPS high school student, proposed "Sazon," a town-wide celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. I observed firsthand how committee members, including sitting BOE representatives, collaborated with her, offering guidance and support. Last weekend, I took part in this remarkable event, witnessing the embodiment of our students' passion for inclusivity and the harmonious teamwork between community organizations and BOE members.

I've consistently sought to be at the heart of community matters. By volunteering at the library, I've come to understand its position on the pressing book banning issue. Separately, through my involvement with the school Equity team, I've experienced firsthand the keys to collaborating effectively with administrators, educators, and parents on matters of equity.

As a board member of the Livingston Chinese Association (LCA), I took a leadership role alongside my peers. We invited Chief Planning Officer Ben from the Jewish Federation to an LCA emergency board meeting to discuss current issues and explore avenues of support for our Jewish neighbors. LCA co-sponsored the Rally on October 15th, marching from Suburban Torah to Livingston Memorial Oval, joining hands with friends from Greater MetroWest. Furthermore, Team "Friends of Fang Gong" contributed to FC Walk 2023, raising funds and awareness to both back the Jewish community and highlight challenges faced by individuals. Our recent visit to Temple Beth Shalom, upon Rabbi Simeon Cohen's invitation, affirmed our unwavering commitment: we unequivocally denounce terrorism, vehemently oppose antisemitism, and stand solidly with our Jewish community.

While the BOE's role is fundamentally about policy-making and governance, it's crucial not to overshadow the day-to-day responsibilities of the superintendent and school administrators. Yet, BOE members must continually seek innovative ways to engage with students, parents, and the public. Every voice in our community deserves recognition and value. Together, we pursue Excellence, Empathy, and Equity.
